Update: Half Pipe Finals – Matt Cook got 1st place! Ben, Chris, Caleb, and Robby got out in semi-finals (top 15)
Ever since I got more than one GoPro HD camera, I have had 3D on the back of my mind. This edit is the most recent product of a culmination of weeks of trials and testing, rigging up camera systems, and figuring out software. It is by no means a final end product, but merely a view of the progress I’ve been making in working with 3D.
This past long weekend (President’s Day) held some of the best conditions we’ve had all year. Everyday was the perfect mix of cool temps and a warm sun. The most notable element of the weekend was the complete lack of wind which enabled us to session the big jumps in Main Park. Check out this edit which was filmed at June Mountain and Mammoth all weekend and features the skiing abilities of Matt Cook, Chris Farro, Ben Gunton, and on the board – Cody Romness. This video was shot entirely on the GoPro HD camera.
Also we’d like to wish a speedy recovery to both David Heimann and Melanie Blair!

At the end of January Chris Nelson, Ben Gunton, Paul Glavin, and myself hopped on a plane and headed to Colorado for the weekend. This year was the first time the SIA (Snowsports Industries America) tradeshow was in Denver instead of Vegas. It’s an industry exclusive show with all of the ski and board related companies showing off their new goods. Chris Nelson’s dad works with a few of the companies present, and I have worked in the ski industry for the past 5 years with 4Frnt skis, designing the artwork on their skis.
We all headed out to the tradeshow on Friday to check out next years’ products and such. Saturday, we headed up to the mountains and made our way over to Aspen to check out the X Games. On our way back we stopped at the tiny Echo Mountain near Evergreen Colorado. It’s the Mt. High of Denver. We all had a good time and put together this little edit. Check it out, or oot (Ben).
The second set of SCCSC competitions took place over the long MLK weekend. Mammoth is currently being pounded by a huge snowstorm; the front end of this storm canceled Monday’s activity – our slopestyle competition. We still had a good Saturday filled with giant slalom and Sunday held the slalom for skiers and the skier/boardercross competition in the afternoon as the weather rolled in.
Congrats to our own Grace Parker for obliterating the competition in all 3 events! Also congrats to Tom Gibbings for getting the top spot in our league in boardercross and to Ben Gunton, Chris Farro, Matt Cook, and Chris Nelson for getting 4 of the top 5 spots in men’s skiercross! Go team!
Over New Years the SCCSC held its first set of competitions. One of the days of competitions was canceled, taking away slalom and skier/boardercross competitions. Still we were able to throw down during the slopestyle competition, as well as participate in giant slalom for boarders and skiers. Check out the video for an overview of the weekend! Congrats to USC member Robby Thorpe for taking 1st place in slopestyle for male skiers, and Abe Kislevitz for taking 1st place in GS for male skiers!
Winter break is here! Celebrate the end of finals with a little winter cheer with the USC Ski & Snowboard Team and get ready for some epic skiing and riding over break! The team sessioned the Mammoth Lakes Ice Rink on its opening day – November 27th, 2009. We were met with some unexpected snow showers!
Features the skating talents of Canadian native Ben Gunton, Abe Kislevitz, Rick Davey, Sean Flanagan, Andy Bui, Jessica Jaime, and Linh-Vy Starkey.
Video was filmed entirely on the GoPro HD.
University of Southern California Ski & Snowboard Team brings you another video shot entirely with the GoPro HD camera. Team members were able to shred the park and then take advantage of the fabled El Niño powder that dropped later in the Thanksgiving week. The 10 or so of us up for that week enjoyed 3 home-cooked Thanksgiving dinners in a row thanks to Sean Flanagan, Sam & Cindy, and finally Andy Bui. The week was filled with snow, hot tubbing, and an epic Christmas/Thanksgiving ice skating sesh at the Mammoth Ice Rink.

Check out for the Ice Skating Edit filmed the same week!
While Mammoth hasn’t received the same sort of snow pounding as Whistler, snow making crews have been doing the best they can and brought out a park that was fully shreddable for the first half of November. This video is from the weekend of November 20-22 and features tricks from team members Matt Cook, Ben Gunton, Abe Kislevitz, Rick Davey, and more. Good news is we just got over 14″ of new snow here in Mammoth and are ready for another week of action. Stay tuned and good luck on those finals!
This video was shot entirely on the HD GoPro camera. Footage was shot at 60fps @720p resolution. Be sure to watch in HD!
Powder Experience
On January 22nd 2010, Chris Farro went through one of the scariest experiences of his life. He pitched forward off a 35 foot cliff into 8 feet of powder. Normally, the more powder the better when dropping large cliffs; however, this day the powder was so deep, he was instantly buried without air. Matt cook was close by, having dropped the cliff minutes earlier, but to trek up-hill in 8 feet of snow is next to impossible. It was his determination and will power combined with Chris’ smart senses to not panic that may have saved Chris’ life.
