Bardia Zandian Hits the Slopes & the Books

As someone who already possesses a Master's in electrical engineering from USC and is continuing study for his PhD in the field, Bardia Zandian never ceases to amaze. Despite his intense workload, he continually shows his smiling face and outgoing personality up in Mammoth as one of the regulars on the team.

Bardia is originally from Iran and grew up loving the outdoors. He got into skiing when he was 7 and switched to boarding about 8 years ago and hasn't looked back. Aside from snowboarding as much as he can, Bardia loves to hike and camp. If you ask what Bardia has been up to recently he'll probably tell you about bungee jumping, traversing the Grand Canyon, or camping in Joshua Tree (thanks Facebook).

Putting his expertise of electrical systems to good use, Bardia offered to help rewire our ancient built-in-house speaker system last New Year's Eve. Equipped with his headlamp and a few screw drivers Bardia got to work. After everything was up and running Bardia kept happily assuring us that "everything is perfectly normal and okay!" whenever we'd question the strange burning plastic smells coming from all of the wall sockets.

Bardia, thanks for the great times and we're glad you're back for another few years!

Fashion Guru & Photographer Extraordinaire is Spotted on the Slopes - March 2008

Nelson De Castro, former snowboard captain and Mustache March participant, is seen here doing just a few of the many things he's mastered thus far in his life. In this case it's snowboarding and photography. Equipped with his new Canon 40D, Kevin Chang's O'Neill retro glasses, Chris Farro's asparagus beanie, and his tall-t, Nelson embodied all that is awesome in this wild generation.

Nelson showed up in Mammoth just about every weekend over the past two years while attending USC. If you're on the team there's no doubt that you know him. Besides ripping it up in the terrain park as one of the few dedicated snowboarders on the team, he's also skilled in guitar playing and making sweet beats in Garage Band.

I know we all look forward to seeing Nelson on and off the slopes again in the Fall. See you soon Nelson!

Last Week in Mammoth

May 14th marked the end of finals for the spring semester at USC so a few of us used our study days to go up and goof around for one last time in Mammoth (and study of course). Here is our edit from our final days in Mammoth.

Mammoth Race Recap April 12-13

The weekend of April 12 & 13 marked the last SCCSC race weekend of the season. Competitions included slopestyle and skier/boarder cross events. USC took home 4 top 8 spots in skier/boarder X and had 8 participants in the slopestyle event. Chris Farro and Alex Clarey of USC took home first and second place for skier slopestyle.

Thanks to UCSB for hosting a great tailgate and party. Getting everyone together on a sunny afternoon was definitely a good time.

We had a great season and are looking forward to next year already.

Hey everyone, thanks for coming out to the meeting to show your support for the team and the officers.

Let me give a big congratulations to all those who ran and want to be a part of the team. We'll be implementing some new things next year so we'll have plenty of ways people can get involved with the running of the team.

Team Meeting Tuesday Feb 5th.

This is a reminder that there is a team meeting on Tuesday, February 5th at 8pm in the Lyon Center Cardinal Room. We want to remind everyone that team meetings are mandatory and we want all of you to make your best efforts to make it out. We will be discussing several issues and giving an update on the season thus far and what we can expect for the remainder of the season.

January Race Recap

The USC ski and snowboard team has been out on the Mammoth slopes working hard and giving the SCCSC league all we've got. Some new faces on the team this year are proving to rack in serious points to get USC the rank it wants by the end of the year. Pictured above are USC racers Sam Kislevitz, Alex Clarey, Mike Chen, and Adam Kleinart gearing up for a morning of shredding thegiant slalom race course.

This year we have been fortunate enough to get pounded with snow all throughout the month of January while keeping the races going strong when the storms subside. It's just about halfway through the race season and the team is still amped and ready to rock the last 4 race weekends, which last through the end of March. If anyone is interested in attending a race at Mammoth, the ski & snowboard team welcomes it and would always love to see the support. Storm of the Month (Year?) (Century?) ?

Eleven brave souls have hunkered down inside the team cabin for what is being billed as the biggest storm in years. Forecasters have been tossing around snow totals anywhere from 6-12 FEET. It looks like the brunt of the storm is about to hit Mammoth, bringing estimated snowfall rates of up to 8" per hour and winds topping over 140MPH.

We have set up a webcam onto the driveway of the team cabin and will be updating it as long as the power stays on. We will also be recording a time-lapse for those of you who missed it:

Mammoth, Snowfest, Homecoming!

A busy semester has finally come to an end, which means it's time for an update of all the happenings. Mammoth started out pretty slow this year snow-wise, but it's been dumping just in time for winter break. We're sitting ontop of a nice 4-6 foot base now with the entire mountain open!

Over the past few months we've gone through quite a lot. Aside from being in Mammoth every weekend since opening, we've had meetings, held a booth at homecoming, and put on a huge campus event - SnowFEST!

Homecoming is always our yearly fundraising opportunity and a way to meet up with past-team alumni. This past November we printed up our classic team logo on USC cardinal shirts, and sold over 120 of them. Thanks to all those that helped out, stopped by, or purchased ski team apparel!

Snowfest went off on November 14th without a hitch. For an event that was largely thought up on a whim between Mammoth Mountain and our team, the event went exceptionally well and gave the USC community an opportunity to experience a taste of Mammoth right in downtown LA. Hundreds of unexpecting students stopped by to snap pictures, throw snowballs, or sled down the hill. The event filled McCarthy quad with a snow hill, rails, and sponsor tents. Thanks to all the sponsors that came out to make the day exciting for everyone - Dragon, Nikita, Active, Skull Candy, Mammoth, Quicksilver.

We're excited to get another event of this nature going for next year so stay tuned!

We hope everyone is having great holidays and we'll see everyone up in Mammoth over the New Years for our first race!

Snowfest!

November 14th, USC Ski & Snowboard Team and Mammoth Mountain are bringing snow to the USC Campus.

The idea behind the event is to give the entire USC community an opportunity to see first hand what the Ski & Snowboard Team does on a weekly basis without traveling the 300 miles to Mammoth.

The event is open to anyone, and will run all day long in McCarthy Quad. There will be a collection of Ski & Snowboard related companies showing off their newest gear and giving out products, sledding open to anyone who wants to go for a spin, and the event will finish off with an open Rail Jam and a Final competition.

Getting Close

October is here, and signs of the season ahead are starting to show up. Mammoth got some snow over the weekend (5"-10"), enough for some poachers to score first tracks in West Bowl off Chair 3.

We are meeting Wednesday night (OCT 10th) in Taper Hall (THH) 210 at 8pm. The team will be providing pizza for the meeting, and we will be watching 'Picture This' after meeting business is done.

For everyone who missed the meeting last night... I hope you already paid your dues. The team is over the original number we wanted to cap it at. If you still want to join and haven't paid dues, there is a significant late fee. If you feel it is unfair and don't want to pay the fee send the team an email and state your case.

For those of you who have joined and paid, welcome to the team. Provided you filled your email address in when you paid dues, you are now on the team email list for this year. Make sure you fill out all the required forms. If you didn't turn them in at the meeting, you can download them here (click the forms link at the top of the page) and then turn them in at the Lyon center. Just make sure the people at the desk know they are for the Ski & Snowboard Team.

Dues Deadline

The deadline to pay dues will be the next team meeting, Wednesday 9/19. The meeting will be the same time 8pm, but inside the Cardinal room at the Lyon center.

After that meeting an additional late fee will be added to anyone who wants to join (before membership is capped). Please print out all the required forms, and bring them to the meeting with you. We will send out links to the USCSA form before the meeting. For those of you who ordered T-shirts with dues, we will bring the shirts to the meeting so you can pick them up at that time.

First Meeting & Dues

For those of you who haven't checked the calendar, we will be having our informational meeting outside of the Lyon Center on Tuesday 9/11 at 8pm. This is that meeting where we tell everyone what the team is all about, how much it will cost, and hand out all those fun waivers.

We met last night to get everything finalized for this season (as much as we can in September, anyways). Most of the meeting revolved around setting dues and pricing.

Team Dues will be $100 or $150 for racing (same as last year)
Housing Dues will be $325 ($25 increase)
Guest fees will stay at $25
Gas cards will stay at $15
June Team passes are $125 until 12/15
Mammoth Team passes are $750

here will also be a Mammoth college card for discount lift tickets this year. We will send out more info as soon as we get it.

We have been getting a lot of interest in the team this year, and we may have to actually cap membership. Because of that, we are going to allow early registration on the website. You can also add a shirt on when paying dues for an extra $10 (save $5) if you haven't already purchased one.

Another thing that came out of the meeting we had, is we wanted to make the team meetings a little more interactive to give everyone more of a reason to come. We will be doing a chain workshop within one of the meetings, but aside from that we don't have any ideas. If you have an idea for a meeting, post a comment or send an email. We are going to try to post at least one blog per week here to keep the website dynamic.

Whistler Summer Skiing!

Matty Jeronimo and I (Abe) took a trip up to Whistler BC to visit some of the best summer skiing conditions that area has seen in a long time. 80+ foot jumps and 75 degree glacier weather made it a trip to remember. Check out some of the photos

The officers of the USC Ski & Snowboard Team would like to welcome you to USC if you are new and encourage everyone to check out what the team is all about in the coming months!

There is a lot do at USC and around Los Angeles, but, especially for those of us from other parts of the country it is very nice to get away some times.

You can participate as much or as little as you desire. Some people come up once or twice, some people come up every weekend. Sometimes people come up just to hang out at the cabin, party, and play in the snow. There are team members who think of the team as their alternative to a fraternity or sorority, but also many team members in the Greek system.

Most of the officers, and many other people on the team think about riding all year round (Did you know it is dumping in Argentina right now?). We are hard at work this summer getting everything set for another awesome season next year.

First SCCSC Freestyle Ski Competition!

This past Saturday the 24th marked the day of the first ever SCCSC freestyle ski competition. A snowboard halfpipe competition took place last year; however, this year skiing was added. During the competition 3 of our skiers placed in the top 3 spots giving us a clean sweep in the division. Congradulations to Matty Jeronimo for 1st place, Alex Clarey in 2nd place, and Abe Kislevitz in 3rd.

Two Race Weekends Down

Results from the first two race weekends have been posted online with the league at www.sccsc.com/results. Thanks to all the team members who showed up, making this USC's best season in recent years.

The next races are only two weeks away and the team is getting prepped for the first freestyle competitons of the year. After the next weekend, we will have mid-season team rankings available, letting us know which team is closest to the coveted 1st place combined trophy.

Winter Break

Some people are already done with finals, so winter break has officially begun. Winter break in Mammoth is guaranteed to bring lots of snow, lots of antics and lots of fun.

There are people coming in and out of Mammoth all the time between now and January 7th. Check the carpool calendar at http://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=skicarpools%40gmail.com. We work our hardest to make sure everyone gets up to the mountain when they want to.

In other good news, we are finally starting to get some snow, although it is still thin out there. We need one good dump to open the whole mountain. Forcasters are saying it could happen as early as next weekend!
