3D Edit

Ever since I got more than one GoPro HD camera, I have had 3D on the back of my mind. This edit is the most recent product of a culmination of weeks of trials and testing, rigging up camera systems, and figuring out software. It is by no means a final end product, but merely a view of the progress I’ve been making in working with 3D.

To view this edit properly, please use Red/Cyan anaglyph 3D glasses. You can purchase some from Amazon, or get some for Free

The edit was shot last weekend (February 20th) in one day and 14 runs at Mammoth Mountain. Two GoPro HD cameras were rigged parallel at the end of a ski pole hanging with GoPro handle-bar mounts. To splice the footage together in post-production, the 3D Glasses filter in After Effects was used. The footage was then all brought into Final Cut for editing. In After Effects, the convergence was keyframed throughout every clip to keep the focal point on the skier/subject since the GoPro naturally won’t focus on anything in particular.

I will be posting more about this process and adding pictures soon!

[..YouTube..] Yet another great video Abe! You’r the reason i bought my GoPro in the first place, love it!
But why did you have to use two cameras ? Did you put the two different shots into one or something?
    Anyways, it was sick!

[..YouTube..] Good to hear! Yeah the way 3D works is just like the way your eyes work – you see the same thing from slightly different angles, thus you get the depth and 3D. Both images were combined together and when you wear red/blue glasses, the left eye only sees the left image, and the right eye only sees the right image.

  30. Posted March 3, 2010 at 9:16 am | Permalink

    [..YouTube..] Cool!!

May I recommend the yt3d tag to allow the viewers to select viewing method.

  31. Posted March 3, 2010 at 12:34 pm | Permalink

[..YouTube..] I uploaded a private version with that. For some reason the aspect ratio isn’t right and also in After Effects I keyframed the convergence throughout, so the focus doesn’t line up with the yt3d tag unfortunately.

  32. Posted March 4, 2010 at 1:21 pm | Permalink

[..YouTube..] seriously?? the song is listed at the end of the video. As noted in previous comments!

  33. Posted March 4, 2010 at 4:48 pm | Permalink

[..YouTube..] great idea. gopros are so cool. cant wait for some more pow!

  46. Posted April 19, 2010 at 9:17 pm | Permalink

[..YouTube..] So, you guy’s mounted two GoPro’s together. Clap boarded them. Then synced them and edited in Final Cut? I’ve been contemplating that method. Skydiving is the drug of choice. Although you are suppose to Jam Sync to achieve a 1/500th second sync for ultimate 3d.
